Retractable leads get a bad name, mostly from the cheap ones — the brake slips, the cord tangles, and you end up hauling your dog back by hand. The mechanism here locks positively and the housing is moulded plastic over a nylon cord rather than thin string.

Who it isn't for
Dogs who pull hard or lunge. A retractable lead teaches a dog that pulling extends their range, which is the opposite of what you want, and a strong dog at 3 metres has enough momentum to hurt you or themselves. Use a fixed lead for training, busy roads, and traffic.

Using it safely
Clip to a harness, not a collar — a sudden stop at full extension puts the whole force on the neck. Keep it locked short near roads and other dogs, and only let the cord run when you have clear sightlines. Never grab a running cord with your bare hand.
Care
Wipe the housing and let the cord retract dry — reeling in a wet cord is what eventually gums up the spring. Check the clip and cord for fraying every few weeks and replace the lead at the first sign of wear.
