Who it's for

Who it isn't for
If you clip your dog twice a year, this is more machine than you need — a hand slicker and a basic clipper will do. It also won't teach you to groom: a bad haircut from a good machine is still a bad haircut. Start with the longest guard and work down.

How to use it
Run the motor near your dog without touching them for a few sessions first, and pay them for tolerating the noise. Once they're relaxed, start with the brush head rather than the clipper. Clip in the direction the coat grows, never against it, and never against the skin — always use a guard.
Stop before your dog does. Two short sessions beat one long one, and a dog who ends grooming calm will be easier next time.
Care and safety
Empty the canister after each session and brush the blade clean. Keep the motor unit dry — never rinse it. Blades get hot with extended use; touch the blade to check its temperature against your own wrist before it goes near your dog. Keep clear of eyes, ears and genitals, and go carefully around loose skin and folds.
